EDMONTON, Alberta — Millbourne Maytag Just Like Home Laundromat in Edmonton, Alberta, Canada, provided dinner for more than 600 people for Canada’s Thanksgiving Day Oct., 13.Coin laundry owners Diah and Hong Park, along with 11 volunteers, began cooking the traditional dinner of turkey, ham, potatoes and macaroni salad at around 7 a.m. Hundreds of people started waiting in line for the free dinner at 10:30 a.m., some staying until 4:30 p.m.The laundry was prepared for 1,000 people, but rain cut attendance to lower than what was expected.“We cooked more this year, but it’s all gone now,” Diah Park told the Edmonton Sun. “People liked the food; some of them came back.”Others brought containers and took home leftovers.The 11-year Thanksgiving tradition began with the previous owners. This was the third for the Parks.“We live together in this world; by ourselves, we cannot survive,” she told the Sun. “We need to share with each other. Comforting each other is very important to me.”Members of the Korean United Church youth group volunteered their time, while other businesses donated food for the event.
