WASHINGTON — With National Poison Prevention Week March 18-24, the American Cleaning Institute (ACI) is reminding consumers to handle liquid laundry packets safely and to keep them out of the reach of children.
“PACKETS UP!” is ACI’s consumer safety initiative to help reduce the number of accidents related to liquid laundry packets. As part of its program, ACI recently launched an educational microsite, www.packetsup.com, which offers free resources to encourage safe laundry room practices.
“Liquid laundry packets are used safely by millions of people every single day when they are used as directed and properly and safely stored,” says Nancy Bock, ACI senior vice president for education. “Simply put, accidents involving liquid laundry packets can easily be prevented with safe use and storage.”
The microsite offers free clings, activity sheets and videos promoting laundry safety.
Accidents involving liquid laundry products don’t just happen at home, they can also occur in public places, including Laundromats. An average of 7 million families frequent Laundromats every week, according to ACI.
A few years ago, ACI partnered with the Coin Laundry Association as part of its efforts in educating the public on how to safely store liquid laundry packets and their containers before, during and after the laundry process.
“It is important to remember that these products are highly concentrated detergent packets,” says Bock. “Their contents can cause serious harm if they are ingested or come into contact with the eyes or skin.”
