Survey: Apartment Dwellers List In-Unit Washer/Dryers Among Top Amenities

WASHINGTON — The latest news from the National Multi Housing Council (NMHC) probably won’t excite route operators or coin laundry owners. Apartment dwellers listed in-unit washer/dryers among the most valued apartment amenities in a recent survey conducted by the NMHC and Kingsley Associates.

The study included a sampling of residents from 12 industry-leading multifamily firms that own and/or operate more than 550,000 units across the United States, says the NMHC. The nearly 15,000 resident responses from more than 1,400 apartment communities cover areas such as apartment features, community amenities, and property management perceptions, among others.

“This is the most comprehensive survey of residents we have ever fielded, and we’re finding a treasure trove of information that will provide invaluable insight for the multifamily industry on just what our residents value in their apartment homes,” says NMHC President and CEO Doug Bibby.

According to highlights from the survey, titled the 2013 NMHC/Kingsley Associates Survey of Apartment Resident Preferences, 88% of respondents rated in-unit washer/dryers as “important or very important,” alongside other features such as high-speed Internet access, patio/balcony, and garbage disposal.

“This survey goes beyond ‘How did you hear about us?’ to better understand what renters value most, how they make their renting decision, what service standards they expect and what amenities are preferred for their chosen lifestyles,” says David C. Smith, vice president and COO at Kingsley Associates.
