D’IBERVILLE, Miss. — Mike Adams Jr. and Jeff Russell of D'Iberville, Miss., are being hailed as heroes after rescuing an infant from drowning inside a self-service laundry’s washer.Adams, who helps run his family business, Mikey’s Café and Oyster House next door to the laundry in D'Iberville, was working later than usual when a woman screaming in Spanish started banging on the glass front doors of the restaurant.“She didn’t speak any English whatsoever,” Adams told local ABC affiliate WLOX. “And when I heard ‘baby’ and she was pointing to the Laundromat, that’s when I got my waitress who was with me here that night to call 9-1-1.”While Jamie Suddeth called for help, Adams ran to the laundry next door and saw the 7-month-old baby boy trapped inside a running washer filled with hot, soapy water. He wasn’t able to open the locked washer door, but when co-worker Russell came over from next door, they were able to free the baby together.“It’s something you would never want to see,” Adams told WLOX. “A baby, he was just purple, [with] blood coming from its head. It was a terrible, terrible thing to see a child that young.”The two turned the baby boy, Valle Hernandez, over, in an effort to clear his lungs until the ambulance arrived. Although badly injured, Hernandez survived.Although Adams and Russell don’t like to think of themselves as heroes, the City of D’Iberville honored their efforts at a city council meeting.“We’re just human beings,” Adams told WLOX. “You would think anybody in that position would have done that.”
