WALTHAM, Mass. — Mac-Gray Campus Solutions, a contract operator of card- and coin-operated laundry facilities in college and university residence halls, has joined Carbonfund.org’s CarbonFree Partner program in an effort to make its college and university accounts carbon neutral.Carbonfund.org’s CarbonFree Partner program supports renewable energy, energy efficiency, and reforestation projects in the United States and abroad to reduce CO2 pollution and help hasten the country’s transition to a clean energy future, Mac-Gray says. The partnership is part of Mac-Gray’s “Lighten the Load” program, which it offers to college and university accounts. This year, Keene State College in Keene, N.H., Salisbury University in Salisbury, Md., and Stonehill College in Easton, Mass., are participating in the program and are among the first educational institutions in the United States to operate carbon neutral laundry rooms, Mac-Gray says.“Managing our impact on the environment has long been a part of doing business at Mac-Gray. It is yet another dimension of what we call ‘Intelligent Laundry,’” says Stewart G. MacDonald, Mac-Gray’s chairman and chief executive officer. “We will continue to make this a serious priority for our company in the future and will work to involve our customers and partners in our efforts.”“Campuses are one of the best places for cutting carbon footprints,” says Eric Carlson, executive director of Carbonfund.org. “Students are engaged and aware of climate change, and they understand the need to make an individual difference. Mac-Gray already lets them do that with its energy-efficient washers and dryers. Now, thanks to our new partnership, they are taking an extra step and making their campus accounts carbon-free.”The program is in sync with Mac-Gray’s Clean and Green Vision, supporting environmental sustainability through the use of high-efficiency front-load washers and dryers, the company says.
