WASHINGTON — A slower economy may actually result in some people turning to coin laundries. Home laundry appliance sales suffered a big drop in April, according to the latest data compiled by the Association of Home Appliance Manufacturers (AHAM).Home laundry appliance sales fell 8.6% from April 2007 on a 22% decline in gas dryer sales, buoyed by a 4.2% decline in washer shipments. Electric dryer sales were down 11.3% in April.For the first four months of this year, home laundry appliance sales are down 6.5%. Washer sales are down 5.1%, while electric dryer sales are down 7.9% and gas dryers are down 9%.As the warmer weather settles in, air conditioning becomes a much-needed coin laundry amenity in many parts of the country. More customers than ever may appreciate a cool laundry this summer based on AHAM numbers. Room air conditioner sales dropped a staggering 29% in April from last year’s April sales figures.The sales decline isn’t limited to home washing appliances. Overall, factory sales of major appliances went from bad to worse in April. Unit shipments of white goods fell 14.1% in April (compared to April 2007) to 6.2 million pieces, a major decline from the 8% drop reported in March.
