Alabama Laundromat to Host Back-to-School Drawing

ANNISTON, Ala. — Washin Golden Springs Coin Laundry wants to send students back to class prepared this fall, so the business has announced a back-to-school draw featuring school supplies as the prize.

Backpacks filled with items from school supply lists will contain paper, pencils, Clorox wipes, white-board markers, glue sticks and more.

Washin owner Ken Barrett says he is using lists provided by local schools, and so far, he has filled 10 backpacks, at a cost of about $200.

Aside from prizes for students, Barrett will also be giving away gift cards to adults for free wash-dry services in his store.

There is no purchase necessary to enter, but participants must visit the store in order to turn in the entry form. The idea is to get people in the door, and even if they don’t spend money for a wash and dry, they know where the store is, he explains. “It seems to generate some interest.”

Barrett has had Thanksgiving and Christmas-time drawings with prizes for kids and adults, and plans to continue the drawings, he says.

The Talladega Superspeedway isn’t far from his store, so Barrett is planning to have a drawing next month that will award tickets for a race there in October.

His goal with these drawings is to promote other local businesses, which he says can promote each other.

Barrett also partners with a local radio station. When the station has some open airtime, a host trades him ad time for laundry services. “It just works well for the both of us,” Barrett says.

He will host the back-to-school drawing July 28.
