Survey: Apartment Markets Expanding in Both Urban, Suburban Developments

WASHINGTON — Apartment markets are continuing to grow into the second quarter of 2014, according to the National Multifamily Housing Council’s (NMHC) quarterly survey, marking the second quarter in a row where all indexes are above the breakeven level of 50.

The NMHC’s Quarterly Survey of Apartment Market Conditions indicates that the market tightness index rose from 56 to 68 from the first quarter this year. The report says that this improvement is partially seasonal, but “the index is higher than the average for the July quarter since the survey began 15 years ago.”

Mission Group Spreads ‘Laundry Love’ to Locals

VENICE BEACH, Calif. — Once a month, Thad’s, a mission group and church based in Santa Monica, Calif., partners with Venice Beach Laundry for Laundry Love, a service that provides free wash/dry for the homeless in the area, or people in transitional housing.

“Laundry Love is really the modern-day foot washing,” says Rev. Jimmy Bartz, founder of Thad’s. “This is where we have the opportunity to get down and engage people on a level where they need to be served.”

FTC Halts Alleged Telemarketing Scammers, Issues ‘Cold Call’ Warning

WASHINGTON — The Federal Trade Commission (FTC) is reporting that it has taken action in stopping three Montreal-based telemarketing operations that “allegedly bilked millions of dollars” from small businesses and other organizations by charging them for unwanted listings in online “Yellow Pages” directories.

In Memoriam: Mary Peet, SUDSY Vending Supplies

WESTMINSTER, Calif. — Mary Peet, who touched the lives of many Southern California laundry owners through her laundry distribution company, SUDSY Vending Supplies, died May 16 at the age of 84.

Starting with a couple Laundromats in the mid-1950s, Peet saw a need for vending products to be sold to patrons. After buying and storing bulk-load detergent packaged in “tubes” for her stores’ vending machines, several other laundry owners asked to buy vend items for their stores. After negotiations with manufacturers, SUDSY Vending Supplies was born.

Alabama Laundromat to Host Back-to-School Drawing

ANNISTON, Ala. — Washin Golden Springs Coin Laundry wants to send students back to class prepared this fall, so the business has announced a back-to-school draw featuring school supplies as the prize.

Backpacks filled with items from school supply lists will contain paper, pencils, Clorox wipes, white-board markers, glue sticks and more.

Washin owner Ken Barrett says he is using lists provided by local schools, and so far, he has filled 10 backpacks, at a cost of about $200.

Lucy’s Fluff and Fold Opens Second Store

ORANGE, Calif. — When opening a second location for Lucy’s Fluff and Fold Laundromat & Drycleaning, business owners Gary and Marty Slizgi looked to Electrolux Professional equipment, the manufacturer reports.

The couple’s first Lucy’s vended laundry business opened in 2006 with a 2,000-square-foot store in Huntington Beach, Calif. After replacing the equipment in 2010, the business grew substantially, according to Electrolux. At that point, Gary Slizgi thought of expanding his business while keeping a focus on fluff and fold.

ACI Completes Year One of Laundry Safety Campaign

WASHINGTON — The American Cleaning Institute (ACI) recently highlighted the one-year anniversary of its KEY Pledge safety education campaign, the organization reports, “reaffirming its commitment to keep children safe from accidental laundry packet exposures and injuries.”

According to ACI, since the launch of its campaign in June 2013, more than 41,000 consumers have pledged to keep their laundry routine safe through an online pledge system.

Laundry Owners, Investors Convene for Equipment Marketers Event

CHERRY HILL, N.J. — Equipment Marketers recently hosted its 20th annual Commercial Laundry Trade Show and Service Seminar here at its headquarters.

The event featured several seminars, and new Maytag products were showcased for the first time, the company reports. The “New World of Laundry” showed “customers and investors alike why laundry is truly in a new world,” according to the company.
